1. This first section of reading gives a lot of history of Will, his family, African Americans and farming. In this post we want to think about the relationship people have to food and the food system. This includes things like: how people get their food, how they participate in the food system, the power they have in the food system, the economic arrangements of food and farming, and the choices people have available to them.
a) Contrast Will′s relationship to food and farming to that of his parents and grandparents. Explain how things have changed from one generation to the next, especially with regard to the power they have and the choices available to them in farming.
b) Contrast Will′s own experience of poverty as a child and the poverty Will observes around him in North Milwaukee in terms of the relationship to food and the food system.
2. How is your relationship to food and the food system similar to or different from your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents?
